Dr. Mary Poon was born
in Hong Kong but raised in Macau, later immigrated to the U.S. for
20 plus years. She is fluent in English and Cantonese. She received
her Psy.D. in psychology from The Wright Institute, in Berkeley, California.
She is also a registered member of the Hong Kong Psychological Society,
American Psychological Association, and Asian American Psychological
Association.
As an intern clinical psychologist, Mary has worked in many different
clinical settings such as community mental health clinic, high school,
child development center, residential treatment, and juvenile hall.
Her specialty is in alcohol, drug and gambling addiction. Dr. Poon
adapts mainly a Harm Reduction approach when working with addictive
clients. She did her postdoc training at the Harm Reduction Therapy
Center, San Francisco, in which Dr. Patt Denning is one of the main
founders and she is also one of the main developers of harm reduction
psychotherapy.
Harm Reduction Psychotherapy is a non-judgmental approach to helping
substance users reduce the negative impact of drugs and alcohol
have on their lives. It respects that people use drugs for a variety
of reasons. It addresses the complex relationship that people develop
with drugs and alcohol. Drug and alcohol issues are addressed simultaneously
with social and occupational concerns and psychological and emotional
issues.
She has extensive experience working with the Chinese community.
She has experience working with individual, group and couple therapy.
She also provides clinical supervision to students at the California
School of Professional Psychology Psy.D. program in Hong Kong. She
has been providing trainings on pathological and responsible gambling
in many different settings in Macau. Her upbringing in two different
cultures plus her diversified working experience will be a benefit
to many clients.
