According to the American Art Therapy Association:

Art therapy is a human service profession which utilizes art media, images, the creative art process and patient/client responses to the created art productions as reflections of an individuals development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns and conflicts. Art therapy practice is based on knowledge of human developmental and psychological theories which are implemented in the full spectrum of models of assessment and treatment including educational, psychodynamic, cognitive, transpersonal, and other therapeutic means of reconciling emotional conflicts, fostering self-awareness, developing social skills, managing behavior, solving problems, reducing anxiety, aiding reality orientation, and increasing self esteem.

Using Art to Unlock Hidden Inner Worlds

Art can be used as a powerful therapeutic tool to help children better understand personal interests, concerns and conflicts. It helps to foster self-awareness, develop social skills, and increase self-esteem. Art therapy uses art as a means of personal expression to communicate feelings, rather than to create aesthetically pleasing end-products judged by external standards. This means of expression is available to everyone, not just the artistically gifted.

An art therapy group for children aged 6 to 12 will meet weekly at Therapy Associates in Central to provide mutual support for each other to improve problem-solving skills and impulse control. The group will meet for 8 weeks (8 sessions). Each session will last for one hour. Group members will learn from other members, accepting self and universality, and supporting and reinforcing each other as peer role-models.

Group members will also use art to facilitate personal exploration as a means to provide a safe channel of expression for strong negative emotions such as anger, depression, fear, and anxiety. Using art therapy in a group helps children break through psychological defenses. The medium of art becomes an important transitional tool for the therapist and the child to unlock worlds hidden in the unconscious mind.

The art therapy group for children is administered by Wendy Kou who also provides art therapy for individuals, families, couples, and groups.
